The European football championship, also known as the ACL or the UEFA Cup, is the most attended and followed professional football competition in the world. The tournament is played annually and is divided into three different categories. The first is the qualifying tournament, the second is the tournament champions and the third is the winners of the tournament. The process of qualification usually involves qualification through an open draw. The ACL has traditionally been considered the most prestigious and watched international football tournament. The European Club Association (UCL) is an international soccer competition organized by the Union of European Football Associations. The UCL is the only governing body for soccer competitions in Europe. The UCL is divided into two regions: the Champions League, the Cup Winners' Cup and the Supplies Cup. The Champions League includes the most prestigious teams in Europe; the highest ranked team in the Champions League receives an invitation to play in the UCL. The Cup Winners' Cup consists of the four teams finishing in the same league as holders of the Champions League; the Supplies Cup is given to the third-placed teams in the Champions League and the runners-up in the Cup Winners' Cup. All games played in the UCL are played on neutral grounds; however, the home and away fixtures are played inside the venue of one association only. The Campeonato Nacional de la Liga, commonly referred to as La Liga and officially as La Liga Santander as promotion and commercialization reasons, is currently the Men's professional football division of this Spanish football association. It is widely accepted that the most recognized and biggest soccer competition in Europe is the Spanish second division. It is composed of ten teams, the leading eight of which are based in Spain. The rest of the leagues in Spain consist of teams from other countries, which are named after the cities where their home stadiums are located. Despite the lower standard of play compared to the first or the second divisions, the Campeonato has enjoyed great success in the past, such as last season's champions Real Madrid, who currently sits atop of the standings with a 20 point lead on nearest contenders Real Espanyol.
